So it's all over the news this morning that Ryanair has launched a takeover bid for Aer Lingus just over 1 week after it was floated. They're offering a very reasonable markup on the current share price, and I have to admit, I'd take it if I was a shareholder.
We mustn't forget that Eircom must be rolling around on the floor laughing their asses off today, unable to believe their luck, they couldn't have picked a better week to cut off all the Smart Telecom customers... Any other week this would have been headline news, and this week no-one seems to care!
All the usual Unions and other press whores are on the news this lunchtime, claiming that Ryanair buying Aer Lingus would be the worst thing to happen to the country since [Bertie] [the British invaded] [we didn't qualify for the World Cup] *delete as you feel applicable.
They really need to grow up and realise that the only thing it's going to mean for the country is cheaper flights. Aer Lingus has slowly been turning into Ryanair for the past 5 years anyway - baggage allowances have become stricter, prices lower, no free food on the short haul flights, no free booze on the long haul ones, etc, etc...
Ryanair has been disadvantaged for years by the fact that they couldn't get into some of the better airports in Europe - hence why flying to Paris meant flying to an hour and a half north of Paris. Who out there isn't going to relish the thought of picking up a €20 flight to Charles de Gaulle or Amsterdam Schipol?? I'll be first in line!
But "think of the poor staff" I hear you cry - well why should I? They've been demanding ridiculous wage increases and threatening to strike for as long as we can all remember... If they take Michael's offer then they stand to make €60, 000 each - a nice little pay-off in my opinion!
If Michael O'Leary has any more cop-on, he'll get his web designers to transform the front page of Ryanair.com into a great big 'election style' swingometer showing how far there is to go until he gets his majority... Those who haven't sold up yet might feel pushed to do it once he's within a percent or two of achieving his goal, otherwise they might get stuck with their shares...
